England player ratings vs Belgium: Jude Bellingham stars but Jordan Pickford and Lewis Dunk slip up

Jude Bellingham’s late goal with the last kick off the match earned England a draw against Belgium at Wembley.

Gareth Southgate’s team had looked lively in attack but defensive errors, notably from Jordan Pickford and Lewis Dunk in the first half which were pounced on by Belgium goal-scorer Youri Tielemans, had left them trailing heading into the closing stages before Bellingham’s late act.

Who stood out and who had an evening to forget? This is how Telegraph Sport rated the England players.

England (4-2-3-1)

Jordan Pickford

Usually so dependable with his kicking but it was an error for Tielemans’ first goal, with the ball failing to clear his defence and presenting the opportunity. 4/10

Ezri Konsa

Started at full-back but shifted inside after Stones injury. Staking a claim for a place in the Euro squad as cover in two positions. 6/10

John Stones

Disastrous night with his early injury, which appeared to happen after losing his footing. Tried to carry on but needed treatment. At least seen on bench with a blanket after break. 5/10

Lewis Dunk

Was an error for Tielemans’ second goal, not helped by the slippery conditions at Wembley. Should have cleared the ball but failed to get contact on the ball and allowed Lukaku through for the assist. 4/10

Ben Chilwell

Still coming back from injury and was getting confidence back in a better performance than at the weekend. Got up and down the left flank and tidy in possession. 6/10

Declan Rice

Captain for the evening on his 50th cap and was at the start of most of England’s moves forward with his passing. Read play to make his interceptions. 6/10

Kobbie Mainoo

Very promising performance. He chased Onana to create big chance for Bellingham and drew fouls. More than a midfield destroyer, he carried his team forward too. 7/10

Jarrod Bowen

Bright game for the West Ham forward. He took on his marker and got crosses in, then had a header disallowed for offside. Good direct running. 7/10

Jude Bellingham

Led England’s attack and had clear chances that he should have taken. Creating those opportunities was encouraging. He was a creative force and was rewarded with equaliser. 8/10

Phil Foden

After a quiet start he drifted inside and got more involved in the game and started creating chances for others. Dangerous set-pieces. 6/10

Ivan Toney

No sign of nerves as he took his penalty to mark his first England start. Had other good opportunities too and showed a touch of the “swagger” that Southgate talked about. 7/10

Substitutes 

Subs: Joe Gomez BOOKED 10 (Stones), James Maddison BOOKED 74 (Mainoo), Anthony Gordon 80 (Bowen), Ollie Watkins 80 (Toney)

Almost a whole game for Gomez after the Stones injury and he had hands full with Doku, although the goals did not come from the Manchester City winger. Maddison was brought on to chase the game in the final phase and provided attacking options, eventually creating the equaliser.
