Average score: an average of 'scaled scores' achieved in reading, writing and maths in key stage 2 assessments. Scaled scores range from 80 to 120.

Meeting standard: the proportion of pupils at each school who meet the standards in reading, writing and maths as outlined by the Department for Education.

Rankings for reading, writing, and maths all compare to the English national average.

Source of all data is the Department for Education and Ofsted. Data relates to students who key stage 2 assessments at the end of year 6 in the summer of 2023. Some schools have been removed if there is incomplete exam results data. Pupil-teacher ratio relates to the number of pupils relative to the number of classroom teachers.

A primary school in west London has emerged as the most successful school in England, as the government releases performance figures for the first time since 2019.

The Hampden Gurney Church of England School in Westminster gained the highest average score across reading, writing and maths.

The score, 115.3 out of 120, means the school has jumped up from 7th place four years ago, the last time assessment results were published due to the pandemic.

In second place was Kniveton Church of England School, in Derbyshire, and Lowbrook Academy in Windsor, who scored 114.7 across the three subjects.

In all, just three of the top ten schools appeared in the list four years ago, including Hampden Gurney, but also St Stephen’s in Newham and The Russell School in Hertfordshire.

Most pupils will sit their key stage two assessments, commonly known as SATs, towards the end of year six, with the government setting an expected standard based on the difficulty of that year's tests.

Across England, the proportion of pupils meeting the expected standard has fallen from 65 per cent to 60 per cent over the course of the pandemic.

However, in 19 of the 15,726 primary schools across England, every single pupil met the standard.

And in four schools across the country, over fifty per cent of pupils passed the higher standard set by the government, with The Minster School in Nottinghamshire at the top with 57 per cent.

London remained the epicentre of high-achieving pupils, with schools in the WC and W postcode (west London) areas scoring an average mark of 108 and 107 alike.

At the bottom of the ranking was NR postcode with an average grade of 103.1.

Primary school assessment tests were cancelled in the 2020-21 and 2021-22 academic years due to the disruption caused by lockdowns.

A series of recent nation test results, including young children's phonics development and the SAT scores, have highlighted the impact school closures and remote learning have had on children's academic progress.
