The Crocus City Hall terrorist attack was Russia’s worst since the Beslan School siege in 2004. 

It has left the country in shock and comes as a chilling reminder of the potency and murderous intent of the Islamic State terrorist group. 

The failure to prevent the attack and the open torture of the suspects after their arrest had also raised questions about the Kremlin’s priorities and the brutalising effects of two years of war on both Russia’s security services and wider society.
