Sky is what’s known as a quad-play provider, which means they offer home broadband, TV, home phones and mobiles. This page features an in-depth look at Sky, including its monthly plans and SIM-only deals, and also explores how Sky Mobile deals fare when it comes to 4G and 5G coverage, download speeds and perks, so you can work out whether a Sky Mobile deal is right for you.

Sky Mobile launched in 2016 and offers monthly contract deals as well as SIM-only plans.
Sky doesn’t offer a huge number of added extras or perks but it does focus on the basics such as data rollover. This gives you the facility to carry over unused data from month to month for up to three years. Sky has also made it easy to switch from your existing provider with its text-to-switch service. Not only that, if you like to mix it up and frequently change your handset, you can do so while in contract with Sky’s Swap12 and Swap24 programme.
All deals come with unlimited calls and texts and you can switch data plans from month to month. You’ll also be able to stream content using Sky apps without it eating into your data allowance. Here are some of Sky Mobile’s top deals:
Top deals are all offered on a 36-month contract but 24-month plans are also available. Bear in mind that opting for a shorter contract is likely to mean you pay an additional cost up front on selected devices.
Unless you want an Apple iPhone or Samsung Galaxy, you may find the choice of handsets limited at Sky Mobile. Outside of these two household names, the only other handsets you’ll find are from Nokia, Doro, Oppo, and Fairphone. Based on this, all of Sky Mobile pay-monthly deals focus on packages that include Apple or Samsung devices, including:
Handset | Data allowance | Monthly cost | Minimum term |
---|---|---|---|
Apple iPhone SE | 10GB | £35 | 24-month contract |
Apple iPhone 13 mini | 20GB | £35 | 36-month contract |
Apple iPhone 13 | 20GB | £38 | 36-month contract |
Apple iPhone 13 Pro | 50GB | £48 | 36-month contract |
Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max | 50GB | £52 | 36-month contract |
Samsung Galaxy S21 FE | 20GB | £37 | 36-month contract |
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 | 20GB | £45 | 36-month contract |
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 | 20GB | £70 | 36-month contract |
Other devices, such as Samsung Galaxy’s Flip3 and A52s, are also available. The above are simply Sky’s best-selling phones.
If you don’t need a new handset, you can buy a SIM plan from Sky Mobile instead. There are just six SIM cards to choose from, so you won’t be overwhelmed by the number of options. The current SIM card plans on offer are:
SIM allowance | Monthly cost | Minimum term |
---|---|---|
2GB data | £6 | 12-month contract |
6GB data | £8 | 12-month contract |
10GB data | £10 | 12-month contract |
15GB data | £12 | 12-month contract |
20GB data | £15 | 12-month contract |
50GB data | £25 | 12-month contract |
If you’re looking at a Sky Mobile phone deal, you’ll be able to choose from either Swap12 or Swap24. These give you the option to swap your phone after 12 months or 24 months respectively. However, it’s important to know that Swap12 is a two-year contract, so you’ll only be able to swap your phone halfway through your agreement. Swap24 is a three-year deal.
You do have the option of upgrading your device earlier than 12 or 24 months, but you can expect to pay an additional charge if you do so.
Sky is a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), which means that it doesn’t have its own mobile network infrastructure. Instead, it uses O2’s mobile network, which currently reaches 99% of the UK with 4G and is rolling out 5G, though this is limited to 194 towns and cities at the time of writing. If you’re particularly keen on 5G, remember you’ll need a 5G-enabled handset to receive it.
If you’re concerned about Sky Mobile being an MVNO and not owning its own network, don’t be – MVNOs make up the vast majority of mobile operators. In fact, there are just four mobile providers that actually own their own network: EE, Three, O2 and Vodafone. All other operators receive their coverage from the ‘big four’, a process known as piggybacking.
You will, however, need to check which of the four big network operators has the best coverage in your area and choose a mobile network accordingly. There’s no point opting for a Sky Mobile deal if O2 coverage in your area is poor.
Piggybacking off O2’s network means that Sky Mobile offers 4G download speeds of around 18.2Mbps (megabits per second). It’s the slowest of all the major networks (in first place is EE, followed by Three, then Vodafone). Nevertheless, it’s still fast enough if you want to browse or stream content on your phone.
If you’re already a Sky customer, you can bundle your mobile phone contract or SIM package with any other Sky service, such as a TV and broadband deal. It’s worth noting, however, that while bundling your mobile phone deal with other Sky services is an option, there aren’t necessarily any additional perks for doing so.
The only tangible benefit for existing customers is that signing up to Sky Mobile allows you to access unlimited Sky content from your phone without using up your mobile data allowance.
The easiest way for Sky Mobile customers to enjoy unlimited streaming of Sky TV content, is through Sky apps. Streaming this content from your mobile phone won’t eat into your data allowance. It’s also worth pointing out that you must be an existing Sky TV customer to access these apps:
You can also manage all your Sky accounts, including paying bills, using the MySky app.
Yes, Sky Mobile offers a selection of handsets, predominantly from Apple and Samsung. Current top deals all include iPhone 13 and Galaxy handsets.
You will, however, be disappointed if you’re looking for brands such as Sony, Google or Huawei, as they’re not currently included in any Sky Mobile offer. Other brands sold as part of a 36-month contract include Nokia, Doro and Oppo devices.
At the time of writing, Sky Mobile customers don’t get any exclusive deals or offers even if they’re existing customers with Sky TV or Sky Broadband. The only real benefit is that you’ll be able to access Sky content using its apps without it affecting your data plan.
Sky has been known to offer Black Friday deals, although these offers change from year to year. Typical deals include up to 50% off iPhone and Samsung handsets on certain contracts.
No, Sky does not offer a pay-as-you-go SIM. If you don’t need a handset, you can choose from a range of SIM card deals, but these are all offered on a minimum 12-month contract.
Sky is a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), which means it doesn’t operate its own mobile network. Instead, it operates using the O2 network, which covers 99% of the UK for 4G.
If you’re in an area with patchy mobile reception, check which of the big four networks (EE, Three, O2, and Vodafone) offers the strongest signal near you and choose another MVNO, such as Giffgaff or Plusnet, accordingly.
Sky Mobile uses the O2 network, which provides 4G coverage to 99% of the UK, making it a reliable network. Other networks are just as reliable, but the network with the widest coverage is actually EE, which spans more than 99% of the UK. Three comes a close second, with 4G network coverage of 99.8%.
There are few ‘free’ offers, but Sky Mobile customers do enjoy data rollover and are able to keep that unused data for up to three years (more than many other phone providers). All deals also come with unlimited calls and texts.
