TalkTalk’s distinguishing feature is cheaply priced broadband deals. In comparison to broadband providers offering similar speeds and packages such as those offered by Virgin Media, Sky, and BT, TalkTalk is cheap. TalkTalk broadband deals are more in line with the likes of Plusnet and Vodafone, who also offer competitively priced deals.
TalkTalk’s other selling point is its wide range of ultrafast fibre-optic broadband packages with unlimited downloads. Contract length is the main downside to signing up with TalkTalk, as most of its deals involve a 24-month commitment, which could result in an expensive early termination fee if you leave your deal mid-contract. With a TalkTalk internet package, you can expect the following features:
The download speeds you will benefit from with TalkTalk Broadband will depend greatly on the type of connection and internet deal you choose. Here is quick rundown of the download speeds you can hope to achieve with the different connection types the broadband provider offers:
Fast Broadband is TalkTalk’s standard broadband package, providing an ADSL broadband connection that runs on copper cables, making it in fact the provider’s slowest package with an average download speed of 11Mbps. An average speed of 11Mbps will allow you to browse and send emails comfortably enough, but will struggle to stream TV services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime even in SD. To sustain a fast internet speed and reliable coverage with an ADSL connection, you’ll have to make sure that no more than one or two devices are connected to the router at the same time.
For the fast speeds, opt for one of TalkTalk’s fibre broadband deals. TalkTalk Broadband offers two fibre packages that are widely available, being fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) connections offering super-fast average speeds:
Fibre 35 comes with a 24-month contract that will allow small households fast internet without interruptions. Fibre 35 delivers an average speed of 38Mbps, making it the ideal package for small households with fewer than five devices online. With this broadband deal, TalkTalk lets you enjoy fast browsing and be able to stream videos in HD.
If you’re a new customer, you can expect to get money off this package as an incentive, with the option of an 18-month contract. This deal is popular with new TalkTalk customers.
Fibre 65 offers super-fast internet, which is ideal for streaming and gaming on around five devices. Fibre 65 provides an average download speed of 67Mbps and comes as part of a 24-month contract. Larger households with several devices online at once should be able to browse and stream in HD comfortably on this deal.
TalkTalk features ultrafast broadband deals offering faster speeds than standard fibre plans. TalkTalk customers on one of these deals also receive the Ultra Fibre Optic (UFO) hub for an enhanced experience. These have limited availability, but if you’re lucky you’ll have two deals to choose from:
TalkTalk Fibre 150 is ideal for large, busy households, as it can support 10 or more devices thanks to its ultrafast average speeds of 145Mbps. Unlike TalkTalk’s standard fibre deals, Ultrafast Fibre offers free postage and packaging to the property of your choice. You’ll also get an appointment with an engineer to install your WiFi box free of charge. Fibre 150 is also a 24-month contract.
Ultrafast Fibre 250 offers mind-blowing broadband speeds of up to 290Mbps, allowing it to support 15+ devices. This broadband deal has a fixed-term 18-month contract, which is shorter than most of TalkTalk broadband deals. Similar to the Fibre 150, this internet plan comes with expert installation and no set-up cost for new customers, as well as inclusive postage and packaging.
TalkTalk Future Fibre delivers what is known as a full-fibre connection. While the ultrafast broadband packages are still powered by a full-fibre connection, Future Fibre is TalkTalk’s fastest package. This broadband plan is known as a gigabit fibre package, providing broadband speeds of 900Mbps, making it a hundred times faster than standard broadband.
There are other perks to be enjoyed with TalkTalk Future Fibre. These include:

Get inclusive internet security for one device. HomeSafe helps protect you and your family from inappropriate content, by adding a filter to your WiFi and by blocking sites that could harbour malware, spyware and other viruses. It’s also a great tool for protecting children from inappropriate content, as it features a KidSafe setting.
Note that HomeSafe is only included with 150 Fibre, 250 Fibre and Future Fibre. Some special offers for new customers on Fibre 35 and Fibre 65 may offer it for free but this is rare. There’s always the option to add HomeSafe to your device separately but this will add to the monthly cost of your deal. Keep in mind also that while virus protection is helpful in securing your device, it can’t guarantee 100% safety.
TalkTalk has partnered with the security specialist F-Secure to develop SuperSafe, an award-winning security software. This will protect your devices against viruses, spyware, phishing, and hackers. The software also includes parental controls to help parents easily control and manage the content their children consume online. TalkTalk recommends combining SuperSafe with HomeSafe to guarantee the highest level of protection when using the internet.
TalkTalk automatically includes the cost of line rental to your bill every month. This is because you’re required to have a phone line to join a broadband provider that uses the BT Openreach network, such as TalkTalk, Plusnet or any major broadband provider that isn’t Virgin Media.
If you’re interested in making calls, you can easily call on a pay-as-you-go basis. This is the cheapest way to make calls if you rarely use your home phone as you only pay for the calls you make. If you’re a frequent caller, TalkTalk offers the option to purchase the phone add-on of your choice for an extra monthly charge. Phone add-ons include Anytime Calls and International Calls.
TalkTalk’s award-winning WiFi hub is a smart device designed to give fibre broadband customers the best connection and coverage. The TalkTalk Hub detects spot issues and runs updates all on its own, so you don’t have to worry about making changes to your router connection yourself. TalkTalk customers with ultrafast deals get the Ultra Fibre Optic hub, which is more advanced and will support the speed of these packages.
Yes, all TalkTalk broadband packages include line rental, but this is true of most broadband providers. The only provider offering broadband plans without a phone line is Virgin Media.
Like any major provider other than Virgin Media, TalkTalk uses the Openreach network to provide your home with an internet connection.
To switch from standard broadband to a fibre connection, you’ll first need to find out whether TalkTalk fibre broadband is available in your area by using an online postcode checker. If fibre broadband is available in your area, you should have no problem upgrading, though it will come at a higher monthly cost.
An engineer will most likely need to visit the property to make changes to your set-up and to install new cables. This might mean replacing the copper cables with fibre-optic ones, and TalkTalk will charge set-up costs for this.
The monthly cost of a TalkTalk broadband really depends on the package you choose but its deals are among the cheapest in the UK.
If you’re getting standalone broadband and already have a phone line installed, the installation will be free of charge. If you need a new line installed, it will cost £60. If you’re also getting a TV package, you may need to pay for set-top box installation if your package requires it.
As soon as you place your broadband order, TalkTalk will schedule a date for an engineer to visit your home if it’s necessary. The installation and activation date is usually within two to three weeks from the date you make your order.
